This course will be an
introduction to the potters wheel and will build upon the knowledge gained in
Ceramics I. Utilitarian wheel
thrown pottery will be explored, as well as glazes, slips, and other decoration
techniques. This course focuses on
technique and skill building while leaving room for your own creative input.
Challenging assignments will be issued in order for the students to begin to
develop skills necessary to find their own voice working in the ceramics
medium.
Class Format:
The class will consist of
demonstrations, lectures, and studio work time that will accompany specific
assignments. Assignments may also
be accompanied by a series of Òhand-outs,Ó slide presentations, and/or
videos. During studio work time, I
will be available to assist you with any technical problems you may be having
and to help you work out your ideas.
Students will also participate in group, or team, activities.
General Rules and
Expectations:
Have
fun, work hard, be creative, fully participate in all studio activities, and
show respect to your fellow students and to the studio equipment. Clean up after your self . . . a clean
studio is a safe studio. If you
complete an assignment before the required due date you are to continue with
the assignment (create more objects than required by the assignment) or decide
on a meaningful project/experiment that you would like to explore.
You are never ÒfinishedÓ working in the ceramics
studio . . . there is always something to explore
Homework:
Although most of the coursework will be completed during class time, you will be required to do some work outside of class. This will mostly consist of research, readings, and sketching ideas for artwork.
Grading: (see ÒGeneral
Grading GuidelinesÓ Sheet)
Grades will be determined
based on the degree of which you engage critically and creatively with the
material presented in class. You
will be evaluated on your ability to complete each assignment by the assigned
due date, display of a strong work ethic, display of an understanding of the
material and processes, your meaningful participation in class, your ability to
adhere to Òrules and expectationsÓ,
and your abilities to follow directions, yet retain your own creativity.
