As ÒCeramics IV/HONORSÓ
students, you will be asked to design your own assignments through consultation
with me. Try to think of
techniques, objects, approaches, or ideas that you have not yet experienced in
clay. Do some research. Look through books magazines, slides,
and/or videos. Find things that
interest you or that you are curious about. Your research does not have to be exclusively in
ceramics. Feel free to find your
interests in other art fields, books, movies, music, etc. Record your interests and ideas in your
sketchbook. Throughout the
trimester, bring these ideas to class and we will discuss them and design an
assignment together. We will
design the assignments in order for you to develop your art.
Also. . . When you are interested in a Ceramics III
assignment, you may choose to base your project on the concept/technique of the
CIII group.
Class Format:
The class will require a
certain level of autonomy and self-motivation to be successful. After initial consultation, regarding
your assignment, you will be expected to work though problems on your own and
seek additional consultation when necessary. You will be expected to develop your own personal voice
working in the ceramics medium and share your vision with your fellow
students. View this course as a
workshop for YOU. Consult me for
advice to create YOUR artwork.
General Rules and
Expectations:
Have
fun, work hard, be creative, fully participate in all studio activities, and
show respect to your fellow students and to the studio equipment. Clean up after your self . . . a clean
studio is a safe studio. If you
complete an assignment before the required due date you are to continue with
the assignment (create more objects than required by the assignment) or decide
on a meaningful project/experiment that you would like to explore.
Homework:
Although most of the coursework will be completed during class time, you will be required to do some work outside of class. This will mostly consist of research, readings, and sketching ideas for artwork.
Grading: (see ÒGeneral
Grading GuidelinesÓ Sheet)
Grades will be determined
based on the degree of which you engage critically and creatively with the
material presented in class. You
will be evaluated on your ability to complete each assignment by the assigned
due date, display of a strong work ethic, display of an understanding of the
material and processes, your meaningful participation in class, your ability to
adhere to ÒRules and ExpectationsÓ,
and your abilities to follow directions, yet retain your own creativity.
How to Reach Me:
If you ever experience
difficulties with your assignments, schedule a meeting time with me. I will be happy to help you with any
problems you may be having. It is
always best to catch problems early!
